PRESS RELEASE
January 27, 2007

Association of Nepalese Teraians in America (ANTA) has been watching with grave concern the deteriorating situation in Nepal’s Terai region. While reiterating its support for the genuine grievances of the Terai people, ANTA is deeply disturbed by the growing incidence of excessive use of force and casualties. ANTA remains convinced that the best course for the people of Terai to resolve their legitimate grievances is through peaceful negotiation. ANTA welcomes positive statements by various sectors in support of Madhesis’ legitimate demands for fair representation of Teraians in all the institutions of Nepalese government. ANTA condemns in strongest terms any acts of arson and violence against innocent people and property. Additionally, ANTA disapproves of attempts by some quarters to malign the genuine demands of Terai people and its movement by overplaying the involvement of undesirable elements in the movement. Dismissing the demands of the Teraians as being externally driven and inspired by misguided elements will be only counterproductive and turning blind eyes to the underlying problem.

ANTA also expresses its dismay over the eerie silence by many of the human rights groups, civil society organizations, and associations of Nepali Diaspora in North America over the worsening situation.

Realizing that time is of utmost essence, ANTA calls for a rapid response on the part of the leadership of the Eight Political Parties and the protesting groups of Terai including the Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) and the two factions of the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) to immediately start a dialogue to restore peace and to find solution through negotiation. ANTA calls on the leadership of the governing parties to show its seriousness by clarifying its position on the demands of Madhesis as a starting point to initiate the national dialogue and to stem growing polarization of the situation. ANTA also calls on the government to refrain from excessive use of force against peaceful protesters and to deliver compensation and proper medical treatment to those who have suffered loss of lives, properties and injuries. Every one who realizes a stake in a unified, peaceful and prosperous Nepal must show solidarity at this time with the genuine demands of Teraians and oppose both inaction and confrontation.

For further clarification or any question regarding this statement please contact ANTA’s spokesperson Mr. Mukesh Singh at (614) 370-9652 or via e-mail at ileshsingh@gmail.com.
