Why Are The Pahadis Quiet?

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

The Pahadi diaspora is quiet.

I did not distinguish between the Pahadi and the Madhesi when I worked full time for a year before the April Revolution happened. I did not distinguish when I worked through the Democratic Party circles in New York City on behalf of Nepal.

Are Madhesis not Nepali like you are? Or are they not part of your definition of Nepali?

The animal behavior on the part of the Pahadi police/army is going to split the country into two. The total blindness of the leadership of the Pahadi political parties is going to split the country into two.

Is not the Madhesi cause your cause?

Where is the Non Resident Nepali Association?

Where is the Nepalese Americas Council today?

Are these not your people?

Manu makhu marsya kha? Manchhe hoina marsya ho?

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

The animals in power are going to lose power or they are going to lose the country. One of the two is going to happen.

Where are my fellow Janajatis today? Were we not supposed to build a DaMaJaMa coalition of social justice? Why will you not express solidarity? Why will you not join us? Are Pahadi Dalits Pahadi first and Dalit second? Are Pahadi Janajatis Pahadi first and Janajati second?

I have not heard of a single statement of support by any Dalit or Janajati organization to the Madhesi Movement, not a single one from any women's rights organization.

Where are the human rights organizations and their jet-setting leaders? Where are the NGOs?

This is shameful.

Today I am utterly, totally ashamed of the entire Nepali diaspora.

I am ashamed of the eight party coalition in power. I am ashamed of Girija Koirala. He could bring this chaos to an end with one speech of reconciliation and concession. But he will not do it. Why?

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

I am ashamed of ANTA too. Why are you quiet? This is a time to take sides. The people are right. The people in power are wrong. You got to take sides and express solidarity. We got to express moral and logistical support.

I am ashamed of the Indian establishment. America might not have heard of the term Madhesi, Europe might not have. But looks to me like India has not either.

This movement is not about peace talks any more than the April Revolution. This movement is about reaching a concrete conclusion, the conclusion of equality.

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

Prachanda and the Maoists can go to hell.

These are ungrateful people. They forget all the help they received into their getting mainstreamed. They forget.

Prachanda is no communist. At the core of it, he is just another Pahadi Bahun, with all his anti-Madhesi prejudices intact.

This is not about Prachanda. This is not about Goit. This is about the 13 million Madhesi people.

Ye to aar ki paar ki ladai hai.

We will take total equality, or we will get ourselves a separate country. Jo des apne ko us des ka nagrik hi na mane us des mein rah ke pana kya hai?

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

When I think long term, I see a South Asian economic union, I see an Asian century. So having a separate Madhesh country does not make a lot of sense to me. The global trend is towards political integration.

But an integration that is based on fundamental, seemingly incurable inequality is no integration at all.

The term Nepali has never included someone like me. I have been hoping that perhaps for the first time ever I will become a Nepali through the constituent assembly. But that can only happen if that assembly is truly representative.

That constituent assembly is not going to be fair to the Madhesi if three million Madhesis are given citizenship papers and another three million are denied the same.

That constituent assembly is not going to be fair if the 205 electoral constituencies are not based on equal population.

And so the heck with the constituent assembly.

Girija loha lega to hum bhi loha lenge.

This is a time for every Nepali to show their true colors. If they are against the Madhesi Movement for total equality, they are not Nepali. Their Nepal does not include the Madhesi.

Those who deny the citizenship papers to the Madhesi are the ones who want the Madhesi to go set up a separate country.

Nagarikta nahin doge to desh lenge. Alag se desh khada karenge. Le lo batan ya de do batan.

Girija, Give A Speech Like Gyane Did In April

I salute the brave street fighters of the Madhesi Movement.

Khare raho, khare raho, hum tumhare saath hain.

The pahadi diaspora has been made to be quiet because of continued violence and attack on their kins back home. Hurling of stones into houses of people of pahadi descent, beating them up, burning their houses, misbehaving with the girls to name just a few are the main reasons of absent solidarity. Everyone agrees that these are the acts of some hooligans but when they are given a cover by a legitimate organization, people are bound to feel cut off from the movement.

Parmendra, I am not surprised on the silence of the "Nepali diaspora" and their organizations since they represent the same bunch that wants to hold on to all the power and resources for themselves. But lets also understand that they do not represent the majority of Nepalis aboroad. Most of these organizations are run by the pawns of the Nepali Congress and UML. They don't have any membership base anyways. We need to build a broader coaliation of Madhesis, Janajatis and all others who support the inclusive democratic system in Nepal. Lets organize a large rally in front of the UN and the Nepal embassy. You will be surprised how many of us will join it.

Coaliation of JAMADAMA is the need of the hour.
