In Solidarity With The Kamaiya Movement

The April Revolution might not have earned equality yet for all Nepalis, but it sure has earned them the right to peacefully protest. I find it fundamentally offensive that the protesting Kamaiyas are getting arrested and beaten up. This has to come to a complete stop, or some people in power are going to have to start to resign.

We should encourage the protests as much as possible. It is very hard for the oppressed to get organized. So when they do organize, that has to be seen as good news. We want more and more of them to get organized, and peacefully protest. That is an exhibition of political consciousness. We should be glad for it.

That is the first step.

The second step is that their grievances have to be heard.

Press Statement by SDN in connection with the Freed Kamaiya Peaceful Movement-2006

I would like to release a press statement on the behalf of SDN in connection with the Freed Kamaiya movement-2006 has been progress in Nepal especially western Nepal. SDN is a NGOs network working in the western Nepal for sustainable development. This Network (SDN) has fully supported to the Kamaiya Movement and has appealed to the government of Nepal to solve the problem and don't arrest the people of kamaiya movement.

As we already know that, the Government of Nepal has declared Freed Kamaiya (Freed bounded labor) on all the bonded labor since July 2000, but still now, there are no any more specific positive intervention with appropriate activities have made for the Freed Kamaiya of Western Nepal. Still more than 90 percentage Freed Kamaiyas are under threat of living with disease, nutrition, shelter and human basic need because of poverty. They have no nominal food and shelter facilities to livelihood. Any kinds of support have been been provided by the Government of Nepal although they have declared bounded labour freed for seven years.

To solve these kinds of problems, freed kamaiyas from western Nepal has started a symbolic Agitation by the name of Kamaiya Movement. They have stared this kind of agitation from the 17th July (seventh anniversary day of Freed Kamaiya declaration); a huge number of Freed Kamaiya from western Nepal, have been organizing march pass and strict related activities in Dang, Banke, Bardia, Kailali and Kanchanpur. In connection with this, a symbolic peaceful agitation for Rehabilitation of Freed Kamaiya has been progress in Kathmandu with the leadership of the founder leader of Kamaiya movement and President of this SDN Mr. Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary.

We deeply sorry to hear about the Democratic Government stand on the peaceful Kamaiyas Movement, and our president Mr. D. B. Chaudhary with various social activists have been arrested in Kathmandu and more than dozen of Freed Kamaiya have been injured, among them two women are under serious condition.

I on the behalf od SDN would again like to draw attention of government of Nepal to solve the Kamaiyas' Problems and the demand of the movement. Similarly I would like to request all the human rights and social activists to support in this matter.

Again, I on the behalf of SDN would like to draw attention all of you, well wisher of the social movement and SDN, for your kind information and necessary support in the agitation.

With Best Regards

Damodar Sharma
