2016: The Year For Barack Obama's Revolution From The Top

2016: The Year For Barack Obama's Revolution From The Top

Barack Obama’s autobiography Dreams From My Father is full of little references to what Nelson Mandela in his autobiography called “a thousand little indignities.” But one was talking mostly about America, the other about apartheid South Africa. Can one black man’s ascension to the top make up for racist snarls at the highest levels of government like in the US Senate?

It is time we faced the fact the United Nations is not a world government. It is time to call a spade a spade. It is time to see this institution designed by the World War II victors no longer works. This is not a world government by the far stretches of the imagination. Often when we talk of civil rights movements, we think in terms of ordinary people marching out in the streets. But now is the time for a civil rights movement in which the heads of state march.

What we have is essentially apartheid. The leading country remains fundamentally racist, nowhere more evident than in the country’s criminal justice system. There is no world government. There is a need for one. The thorniest global problems, the loftiest trade deals are worked on outside the UN framework.

America itself needs to be reimagined if it is to fulfill its original mission of a total spread of democracy. It needs to become a country where African immigrants are as at home as European immigrants. White is black is white.

In a democracy you get to vote because you are a human being, not because you are literate or rich. But in the community of nations, there are countries that are rich and have guns, and most have neither. The entire continent of Africa stands disenfranchised. This landmass that is the most central of all, from where we all originated, is still in the clutches of a contemporary incarnation of colonization, slavery and apartheid. We don’t have a name for it yet, but the affliction is very real. Its poverty and disease stem from that disempowerment, not the other way round. And so, any voice that seeks to address its poverty and disease without taking stock of its disenfranchisement is shedding crocodile tears.

What is Barack Obama going to do? Leave the White House and do paid speeches? Write books? Launch a foundation? Raise money for AIDS? Share a stage or two with Bono and George Clooney? The guy is still young. This guy who has cleared up half century old cobwebs every year he has been in office is best suited to lead this revolution from the top. And this is not a cry for Africa, although Africa could use some empowerment. This is a cry for the world. Right now we are a species looking down a sinkhole of uncontrolled weather patterns that just might wipe out life and civilization as we know it. We still have immense poverty and disease that Bill Gates says “only a world government can solve,” and Gates is a guy who has thrown the kitchen sink at the problem, one of the leading entrepreneurs of the era in whose wake many billionaires have given money to fight basic poverty. We face security threats that no one government can solve. Globalization continues to move at breakneck speeds speeding up as the Internet takes deeper roots everywhere, but we have not done the task of institution building that that globalization requires.

Let’s open our eyes and take a look at the elephant in the room. Yes, what we need is a world government, and there is no person better than Barack Obama to take the lead on it. We are lucky we have a George Washington precisely when we need one. And lucky us that the guy is almost done with his current job where he has been stellar every year. Heads of state across the world should join in this chorus and shape this revolution from the top. Lucky us that our thorniest global problems have solutions in political concepts we have already designed, like one person one vote taken to its logical, global conclusion.

There is always inertia. Every monumental political change that in hindsight looks so obviously positive has faced inertia. And this likely will be no different. But the blueprint has to be made, and it has to be presented to ordinary peoples on all continents, so a groundswell of support can build around it.

We want to live in a world where human beings can feel equal everywhere. We want to live in a world with abundant clean energy. We want to live in a world with abundant water, and food and green space. We want clean air. We want to create the industries of tomorrow. We seek unprecedented rises in productivity, as well equitable distribution. We want people to be happy.

It is time the heads of state across the world came together and created the world’s first world government in the leadership of Barack Obama. In his birth as well as personality and outlook, he bridges the world. In his person the world has a chance to come together to reach new heights. This century can not only be the best ever, it can also be one where we have gone past our existential worries, where we have created a truly global civilization, one grand village where everyone can feel a sense of belonging everywhere, where people can take pride in their heritage and claim the common future at the same time, without hassle.

This is in essence a political struggle, where all you start with is a voice. Ordinary people have done it many times before. Heads of state can do it this one time.

It is still about Hope. It is still about Change.

We need a world government because it is time we established rule of law between nations. That is the civilized way.

Nepal: Political Laboratory

Nepal, more than anything else, more than a place where I grew up, more than lingering therapy for some past unpleasant to downright devastating experiences as a Madhesi, has been a political laboratory for me. I have imagined new things possible. And I have been disappointed.

It would have been nice to have one third of the constituencies reserved for women. Noone else in the world is doing it. A new constitution should be a cutting edge constitution. But that was not to be. I would also have liked a multi-party democracy of state funded parties, each party getting money in direct proportion to how many votes they collect, and being barred from other sources of funding. But not even the Maoists have gone for this.

I have not been a journalist reporting on events. I have been a digital activist trying to shape events. The distance has been a boon. I would have been less effective in person on the ground. From 10,000 miles away in New York City I have devoured on information sources to suggest actions and strategies to the progressive forces. The progressives of 2005 are the unapologetic regressives of 2015, and so 2015 still feels like 2005 to me, as the cause closest to my heart, equality for Madhesis, is as unfinished as ever as of now.

But the good news is India is waking up. As late as early this year, I was lamenting the word Madhesi does not exist in Patna, Lucknow or Delhi. But now the word also exists as fas as Kerala. The Madhesis for the first time have showed up on the Indian map. Never before have an Indian Prime Minister, an Indian Home Minister, an Indian Foreign Minister taken interest in Madhesis. Heck, I never got the impression they were ever aware we even existed. But that has changed, and that is tectonic. There are as many Madhesis as Jews on the planet today. Jesus was born a Jew, Buddha a Madhesi.

There have been take away lessons for me. I might have failed to shape political events exactly to my liking in Nepal, but I have managed to formulate a political roadmap for India. That India is the largest democracy, and democracy is not India doing America’s bidding, although it is high time America considered India to be the new Britain, its number one ally in the world. Democracy is native to India: the earliest republics were during the early years of Buddhism. America’s original mission of a total spread of democracy gets kneecapped by its original sin: race. The militarism gets in the way. It is too rich and unrelatable by the vast swaths in the Global South. There are not enough semi-educated Muslims in America. India has none of those disadvantages. India is better positioned to carry the torch than is America, although it remains shy. There is a peaceful way to spread democracy. Actually, peaceful is the only legitimate way, it is the most effective way. And there India can take the lead. And there my Nepal experience has not disappointed. If democracy will enter China, it will more likely do so through Nepal than Taiwan. Tibet is China’s soft belly. Tibet is too far from the China proper, and it is too close to Nepal and India. The Tibetan plateau will forever remain vulnerable, until it opens up.

The Law Of Political Entropy (I formulated it) says, a country tends democracy granted there is sufficient flow of information. Democracy is the natural order of things, and it comes from inside the human heart, inside every human heart. But its expression requires a free flow of information, often stenched by autocratic regimes. So powers like America and India that live and die by democracy, or should live and die by democracy, should focus first and foremost on beaming down the Internet to all corners of the globe. Elon Musk is already doing it. The US government should simply become an angel investor and perhaps buy 10% of his satellite internet company for 10 billion dollars. The growth that investment might see will also help pay down some of the humongous American debt. The Chinese might appreciate.

Democracy has to come as a consciousness and a roadmap, and an organizational structure and a leadership flow. Perhaps you start in the diaspora. Once you are ready, and you have an interim constitution at the ready, and an interim Head Of State in waiting, then you seek to shut the country down completely. At least 25% of the people will need to show up in the streets. The interim government holds elections to a constituent assembly within a year of taking over. The only rule for the interim and the subsequent cosntitution is it may not clash with the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights.

This roadmap is the best for the cause of a total spread of democracy, and Nepal has been the political laboratory where I saw it tested on the ground. In this roadmap, the smartphone is the AK-47.

This also means opening wide the doors of immigration in the rich countries. Not only do you need that to prop up your own ageing populations, remittances have been way more effective than foreign aid, and diasporas pick up lessons in democracy and organizing that State Department programs can’t teach, it is beyond their scope. The scale is humongous. Immigration can not, should not be stopped, it should be encourged and managed well. Do not fight it, tame it. Globalization is not just a free flow of information and goods, people also want to move around. That movement brings forth progress. People always seem to want to move from less desirable to more desirable conditions. They know what is more desirable. They move, they soak up, they learn, and then they propagate. They beam it all back to places where they came from. And light spreads. It’s not just democracy, it’s also prosperity. Democracy very appeal is that it makes prosperity possible.

The Indian ambassador in Nepal is powerful the same way a Marwari is rich, like the president of Nepal is powerful: he ended Prachanda's, the fierce one's, political career. But the president gets humiliated repeatedly and has to act like he did not notice. The Marwadi was the primary target of the 2000 Hrithik Roshan riots. An Indian ambassador who regularly doles out goodies to the India hating politicians of the Kathmandu establishment is really not that different from the Madhesi president, or the Marwari multi-millionaire. They are all Indians not being able to, refusing to come to terms with their Indianness. There is disbelief, there is denial. When I first experienced the anti Madhesi anti Indian racism in Nepal (and I have been stopped dozens of times in America in the post 9/11 world including while the two buildings were burning on TV and the locals in that small Kentucky town called the cops on me, and the racism does not come even close), so what I experienced was not racism, but something much more virulent, only I was attending the top school in the country, where I had been the top student in class for all seven years to that point, held all major leadership positions, (I did not exactly lack friends or popularity). But when the racism hit, years before I finished high school, I felt it extremely deeply and fiercely, and totally, and the helplessness came from the fact that I had no words to describe what was going on. It is like you see water but don't know the word, what would you call it? But the impact was total. My grades nosedived and I barely inched past graduation a few years later. It was a doubly whammy, a Bahun-British double whammy. It was lack of vocabulary to describe what was going on that threw me so off balance. The experience was an emotional equivalent of someone jabbing a knife into my thigh while I was running full speed. I fell on the tracks, reeled in pain. It was as if I had entered a different dimension that people around me simply did not have access to.

I won an election in the US South before Bobby Jindal did, in the Deep Bible Belt. Within six months of landing I got myself elected student body president. I won on charm. But if I don't "go back" it is because I want to play a global role to help take India to becoming a 240 trillion dollar economy. I wish to colonize. I wish to help colonize. If equality is not an option, we might as well counter colonize. Nepal is as good a place as any. We might as well start in Nepal. I have created a space in the digital realm. I personally know people like Rajendra Mahato, Upendra Yadav, Hridayesh Tripathy, CK Raut. My digital activism helps me do what I could not do in person. And that is great because I have no plans to show up in person. I am never going to run for public office. I moved past the joy of retail politics a long time ago. My path is digital activism and tech entrepreneurship. What burns in my mind is the bruteness of the possibility of the Indian Century, or two. The funny thing is, I was not even rooting for Modi in 2014. I admired his work in Gujrat plenty, and I did not hold 2002 against him because the Supreme Court of India didn't, but my Bihari roots had me rooting for Nitish. But Modi won me over when he kissed the steps of the Indian parliament, and burst into tears in his first speech to the BJP parliamentary party and said, "Jis tarah Bharat meri maan hai, usi tarah BhaJaPa bhi meri maan hai." And I was like, this guy is different, he is not a career politician. This is a man on a mission. I was Barack Obama's first full time volunteer in New York City. Modi is the Obama I was looking for. My dignity in America is tied to how well India does.

I love New York City. I love diversity. My favorite thing about America are inter-racial, cross-cultural kids. And that is not in contradiction to my talk of the Indian Century. For as long as I can remember, I have been for equality, not segregation. I like mixed crowds. The thing is only political equality can make mixed crowds possible.

It is for India to prove democracy really is the superior system by growing faster than China did: I think 15% possible. It is Indian Muslims who are best positioned to bring about a total spread of democracy across the Muslim World, the only way to conclude the War On Terror. I want a casteless Hinduism that seeks converts across the world. An International Yoga Day is not a bad start. I want an India that helps Africa. Because only Africa can help African Americans in ways the first black president has not been able to.

So when I say I want India to colonize, I don't mean let's go kill like Hitler killed Jews, or Churchill Indians, or America killed in Japan and more recently Iraq. Israel, India, and Japan stand together because they are three Asian democracies who can feel each other's pain. When I say India should become a 240 trillion dollar economy, I think of Israel as the Guru that will take us there. Churchill killed more Indians than Hitler killed Jews and around the same time.

When I talk of the Indian Century, I mean in terms of creating a world where Indians nowhere get mistreated, nowhere get treated second class, not in any country in Africa, not in any town in America, least of all in a country like Nepal that is 200% dependent on India. British colonialism ends for India in Nepal. It has not ended yet. The Nepal India border was drawn by the British and is highly arbitrary and unscientific.

A global superpower India is one that has created trillions in wealth to wipe out poverty in India. A global superpower India represents not just Indians in India, but Indians everywhere, Indians in every town in America.

A global superpower India spreads democracy like America has not been able to, because it is not a Third World country, because it does not have a large enough Muslim population, because America is still too enthralled with its original sin: race.

But all that starts in Nepal. In Nepal I will get to see if Modi is for real. In Nepal now, today, I will get to see if Modi really embodies the beginnings of an Indian Century. All he has to do is stay the course. India can grow at double digit rates and achieve parity with China and America in decades, but it can not go past that unless it takes free speech and diversity to unprecedented heights. But all that is later. For now you can not be seen struggling with basics like dignity and equality for your own in a country that is so dependent on you. All Madhesis are asking for is citizenship papers, and one person one vote, and a federalism that is a simple extrapolation of that one person one vote. Madhesis are asking for equal status for Hindi in Nepal. Madhesis are asking for 20th century rights in the 21st century. If Modi blinks now, I will feel like I placed my bet on the wrong man. I will have to wait for someone else to help shape the beginnings of the Indian Century. You can't jump onto the development bandwagon unless you have those basic rights. Democracy is not India doing America's bidding. Democracy is native to India. The world's first republics were in the early days of Buddhism. India is reclaiming those roots. It does not seek to invade, kill and convert. Democracy is best spread peacefully. The Indian Century is about Indians everywhere getting organized to achieve and protect equality, it is about Indian getting educated and prosperous: all achievable.

It will break, but it will not stretch भने जस्तो। He is talking to his voters.

China And SAARC

SAARC is an organization of democracies. China can join SAARC once it has become a democracy.

China has had an impressive economic track record from 1990 to 2010. But the days of double digit growth rates are over. Xi Jinping is a good guy, but if he wants to take his country back to double digit growth rates his one option is bold political reforms leading all the way to plurality. And the best way to make those moves might be from the very top.

Yes, it is about Tibet. Tibet is an integral part of South Asia. It is by way of Tibet that China has any currency in South Asia. The ties go back thousands of years. Buddha was born in Nepal but it is in Tibet that Buddhism has its deepest roots. Those bonds are strong. A Lhasa to Lumbini railway track would symbolize that.

No one wants to go back to the way things were. The Dalai Lama himself does not. The idea of the same person being head of state and head of religion are outdated. Tibet wants and deserves its prosperity. Tibetans don't want a separate country. But their religious freedom will not be denied forever. Their human rights are as sacrosanct as that of anyone else.

And to that end many options are available. If a larger global alliance of democracies - America, India, Japan - will have to be forged, so be it. And that would be sad. Because this is not a geopolitical struggle to put China down. China is a proud country with a proud heritage. About 800 years ago China was the leading country on the planet, and it might still become that. And China has a lot to teach. China could teach campaign finance reform to America and India. That is there. China has lifted more people out of poverty than any other power. That is exemplary and India should learn. When the 2008 recession hit, if it were not for the strength of the Chinese economy, the world might have gone into a deep Depression.

The Chinese are a proud people and they deserve their rightful place under the sun. They have so much to give, they have so much to teach. I would like to see a day when you can get on the train in any part of the world and end up in Beijing. Why not? The sound finances of the Chinese government might help fund much needed infrastructure projects all across the world.

But there is no fighting the inevitable. China owes itself bold political reforms. I want Taiwan to be part of China, but that will not happen unless China steers itself to political pluralism.
